I own two Gibson Les Pauls, two SGs and two Gibson basses. I have a 1976 Gibson LP Standard and a 2013 Gibson Traditional. Both are great guitars. The newer one has PLEK'ed frets and what a difference.
Now, to the point ... I tried the latest version of the LP Traditional and was not entirely impressed. First, you have to buy it with the G-Force tuner. It tunes the guitar, but I noticed it needed to be tuned frequently. The keys are UGLY and the capstans look like potentiometer shafts. The box on the backside is UGLY and cumbersome.
Next, the neck is wider (so it could accommodate the G-Force tuner I had read). I don't have small hands, but I noticed it felt like a telephone pole.
The "zero fret" is kind of a nice idea, but I noticed a little drop in the Gibson warmth when it came to sound ... the zero fret is brass and the bridge saddles, a salesman told me, were titanium. The guitar sounds brighter than I'm accustomed to.
The elegant "Les Paul Model" decal on the headstock is gone and is replaced what appears to be Sharpie pen scribbling. Aesthetics.
What is with the stupid looking Les Paul, 3-D holographic sticker on the back of the headstock, below the boxy G-Force tuner? It's really tacky looking and what is its purpose?
I was unimpressed with the "new look" Gibson with one exception. Their PLEK process on the frets really does wonders.
Unless Gibson gets off of this nonsensical path, I think I'm done buying models with these "features."
So, that's my shake on Gibson and their new direction!
Anybody?
